"The Love Letter" By ~ Samuel Luke Fildes ~ 1843 - 1927.

Samuel Luke Fildes was a Liverpool-born artist. He first studied art at the Mechanics Institute in Liverpool and then at the Warrington School of Art. After winning a scholarship Fildes was able to continue his studies in the Kensington Art School in London and at the Royal Academy.

Fildes is well-known for the coronation portraits of King Edward VII, painted in 1902, and of King George V painted a decade later. The bombast of these magnificent images, however, is not representative of his manner as a whole, and the sensitivity of the present portrait is far more typical. Fildes came late to painting, and his earliest work is as a graphic illustrator in a pre-Raphaelite manner that appealed to John Everett Millais, and led the later to recommend Fildes as an illustrator for Charles Dickens's last novel Edwin Drood. When Fildes took up painting in the 1870s it was in a vein of Dickensian realism much to the taste of the contemporary public, and one of his first public essays, the large canvas of Applicants for Admission to a Casual Ward (Royal Holloway College) was rapturously received in 1874. Four years later Fildes was elected ARA and in 1887 was made a member of the Royal Academy.

Historical genre painter and illustrator. Son and pupil of Frank Stone (ARA, 1800-1859). Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1858 and elsewhere. Became an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1876, and a full member (RA) in 1886. Mainly painted genre scenes set in the 18th century or Empire costume. The themes are usually dramatic, sentimental, or sometimes humorous. RA titles: 'Rejected', 'The First Love Letter', 'A Stolen Kiss', etc. 'Il y a Toujours un Autre' (RA 1882) ('There is always another') was bought by the Chantrey Bequest for £800. In his own day Stone's pictures were much admired and fetched high prices. He illustrated Our Mutual Friend for Dickens and worked for Cornhill Magazine. Works by him are in many English museums.

"Grace Rose", By Anthony Frederick Augustus Sandys ~ 1832 - 1904.

The son of a painter, Sandys was educated at the Norwich School of Design. He began his career as a portrait painter and antiquarian illustrator, exhibiting at the Norwich Art Union even as a boy. He moved to London in 1851 and worked as a draughtsman for wood engravers.

Henry John Yeend King was an important Victorian genre and landscape artist.  He was born in London on August 21, 1855 and began his education as a choirboy at the Temple Church.  One of the artist’s earliest recollections was of being locked in the building one afternoon after practice: “I had to spend the night in a cabin built of pew cushions, while my father was inquiring at every hospital in London.  After three weeks’ rest with a bad cold, on going back to my choral duties I was summoned to an interview with a Bencher, who, after regaling me with cake and wine, presented me with five shillings for having been a ‘good boy,’ and ‘for not having thrown my boots through one of the stained-glass windows.’ The idea of doing such a thing had never occurred to me.”

The genre painter and portrait painter Anatole Vély (1838-1882)was born in Ronsoy (Somme). He studied at the Académie de Valenciennes and then under Émile Signol at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Vély exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1866 to 1880.

François Barthélemy Michel Édouard Cibot (1799–1877) was a French historical and landscape painter born in Paris. His masters were Guérin and Picot. During the first part of his career he devoted himself to historical painting, producing many sacred works, several specimens of which are to be seen in the churches of Paris. His most important work of this kind is the series of paintings representing 'Charity,' in the church of St. Leu at Paris. About 1863 he applied himself to landscape painting.

"Farewell".

English painter of Spanish and French descent. His father, at one time a Roman Catholic priest, was Professor of Spanish Literature at King's College, London. Calderon studied at James M. Leigh's school in London in 1850, then in Paris at the studio of François-Edouard Picot. He lived near by in Montmartre, sharing a room with fellow art student Henry Stacy Marks. He exhibited his first Royal Academy painting, By the Waters of Babylon (London, Tate), in 1853 and thereafter became a regular exhibitor until 1897. He first made his name with Broken Vows (London, Tate), exhibited in 1857. The painting shows a woman overhearing through a garden fence her lover betraying her and was painted in the detailed, clean-cut style associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. It was successful with critics and public alike and was engraved in 1859.

John Henry Frederick Bacon M.V.O., A.R.A., (1865 - 1914) was a painter of domestic, genre, and biblical scenes, as well as an illustrator of books, periodicals and children's books. He became a very fashionable portrait painter of distinguished men. His best known work is "The City of London Imperial Volunteers Return to London from South Africa on Monday 29th October 1900" in the Guildhall, London. Bacon came soon after his marriage in 1894 to live in Pillar House where some of his seven children were born.

"Portrait Of A Lady In White" By ~ Louis Lie Perin-Salbreux ~ 1753 - 1817.

Louis Lie Perin-Salbreux (1753 Reims - 1817 ibidem) was the son of a cloth manufacturer in Reims, where he studied under Ganes, called Clermont. At the age of 25 he went to Paris, where he became a student of Lemmonier and Sicardi and became friendly with Roslin, who is said to have advised him to specialise in miniature painting. In fact, Perin excelled in this field, although he also did portraits in oils and in pastel. He exhibited at the Salon from 1793 to 1798 and seems to have rapidly gained success in Parisian aristocratic circles, a clientele he was forcibly deprived of by the Revolution.

Davies studied at the Royal College of Art, Guilds Art School, and at Heatherley’s.  He then worked in London as a miniaturist, portrait and figure painter.  He began to exhibit at age 18.  He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and Royal Society of British Artists.  His work has been reproduced into calendars and posters by the thousands.

The London born Arthur Hughes studied at the Somerset House School under Alfred Stevens and later at the Royal Academy Schools were he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt. Together Hughes and Rossetti helped create the mural of the Oxford Union.

Hughes became influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite ideals as a result of reading their briefly published magazine, The Germ, which was introduced to him by fellow School of Painting sculptor, Alexander Munro. He would become one of the second generation Pre-Raphaelites along with Edward Burne Jones and John Roddam Spencer Stanhope.

William Clarke Wontner was a neo-classical painter during the neo-classical movement of England, of which Lawrence Alma-Tadema was the foremost leader. Wontner added Orientalist elements into his paintings because he loved to paint seductive women often against white marble walls in classical oriental settings.

Frederick Sandys was one of the finest draughtsmen of the Victorian period. Until his very last days he was drawing almost entirely in chalk in his Victorian house on Hogarth Road. His family became the principle subjects of his work during these years and his youngest daughter Gertrude was the sitter for The Laurel Wreath.

Anton Einsle (1801 Vienna - 1871 ibidem) was a very significant Austrian portrait painter of the 19th century. At the age of 13 he began studying at the Vienna Academy and painted his first works on commission at 16. His first portraits in oil and miniatures are known to appear in 1827. His works were represented at all great exhibitions in Vienna from 1830 on. Einsle worked in Prague and Budapest for a few years. He soon became a favourite portrait painter of high aristocracy and royals and was an official portraitist of Kaiser Franz Josef I. Works by Einsle are represented in many museums in Austria and abroad.

Herbert James Draper

Herbert James Draper - best known for his dramatic and romantic paintings of sweeping mythological and literary subjects. He was a painter of beautiful, romantic subjects and considered a latter pre-raphaelite style artist. His work displays a keen sense of drama and color, with subjects or entire art works depicted in a singular, closely related color . Although almost reaching a point of being monochromatic, Draper's color style is clearly defined and brings about a dream like feeling. The painting Lament for Icarus is a primary example of Draper's color use.

"Grazieuse", By ~ Angelo Asti ~ 1807 -1903.

Angelo Asti (1807-1903) was a well-known French artist who specialized in portraits of beautiful women.
Some consider him the father of the pin-up art as his work was widely used in calendars and postcards.
Unlike Stieler whose portraits were very classical, Asti's are of Art Nouveau style. 

"Colour Thy Soul", By Armand Point ~ 1860 - 1932.

Point began his career as a realist, painting scenes set in North Africa. After a trip to Italy in 1893, he became enamored of the works of the Italian artists of the 14th and 15th centuries and adopted their styles as well as their medium of tempera painting. Point became associated with the symbolist movement in the 1890s and worked with Joséphin Péledan (1858-1918), the high priest of the Rosicrucian brotherhood. Members of this group sought to bring art closer to the ideals of Catholicism through the use of mysticism, legend, allegory, and dreams.

"The Courtship", By ~ Theodore Levigne ~ 1848 - 1912.

Théodore Levigne was born in 1848 in Noirétable, dying in Lyons in 1912. He was a painter of portraits, genre scenes, seascapes and landscapes with figures. His landscapes, which are often set in winter, depict in half tones the damp and misty waterways around Lyons, where he settled, although he also painted seascapes of the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast. In 1998, the Atrium in Tassin-La-Demi-Lune presented a retrospective of his work.

"Innocence" BY ~ William Bouguereau ~ 1825 - 1905.

"William Bouguereau is unquestionably one of history's greatest artistic geniuses. Yet in the past century, his reputation and unparalleled accomplishments have undergone a libelous, dishonest, relentless and systematic assault of immense proportions. His name was stricken from most history texts and when included it was only to blindly, degrade and disparage him and his work. Yet, as we shall see, it was he who single handedly opened the French academies to women, and it was he who was arguably the greatest painter of the human figure in all of art history. His figures come to life like no previous artist has ever before or ever since achieved. He wasn't just the best ever at painting human anatomy, more importantly he captured the tender and subtlest nuances of personality and mood. Bouguereau caught the very souls and spirits of his subjects much like Rembrandt. Rembrandt is said to have captured the soul of age. Bouguereau captured the soul of youth.

The Letter, By ~ Vladislav Chahursky ~ 1850 - 1911.

Vladislav Chahursky (Polish Władysław Czachórski; race. September 25, 1850 (18,500,925) Lublin - the mind. January 13, 1911 Munich) - Polish painter of the academic direction.
B. Chahursky studied painting in Warsaw at classroom risunkovom Rafał Hadzevicha later - in Dresden (1868) and Munich (1869-1873). In 1874-1877 years he makes a trip to France and Italy. Since 1879 he has been living in Munich, where he works as a professor of painting in the local Academy of Arts.

The theme for his paintings of the artist chose the genre scenes, wrote as portraits and still lifes, paintings on the works of William Shakespeare. Was under the creative influence of Dutch painters, especially G. Terborch. Special well-known artist brought his female portraits made with the utmost attention to detail. The works of Chahurskogo were so in demand that customers had to wait for their turn to 2 years. After the death of Chahurskogo some Polish artists (such as E. Nevyadomsky in 1923) have criticized the master, accusing him of cosmopolitanism, the commercialization of art and even the loss of talent. Nevertheless, the papers of Chahorskogo to this day are very much appreciated.
